Led by a volunteer board of directors since its formalization in 2013, the Uptown Business Association of New Westminster (UBA) has hired its first ever executive director. Sheila Cameron will manage the non-profit society’s operations and execute the board’s vision and strategy.
Where and what is the UBA?
All businesses located in uptown New Westminster are welcome to join the UBA. Additionally, the Business Improvement Area (BIA) of the UBA operates between 5th and 8th Avenues and 5th and 8th Streets in New Westminster. BIAs support economic development and promote commercial success among businesses of all sizes within their catchments. “The hiring of an executive director is timely because the UBA is primed for a reset,” said UBA Board Chair, Bart Slotman. “The board plans to determine a long-term vision for championing uptown New West businesses, and it is no longer feasible to rely on volunteers to carry out the UBA’s mandate.”
The UBA’s mandate supports uptown New Westminster businesses through its five pillars—marketing, events, street beautification, outreach, and advocacy. The UBA is currently accepting grant applications from uptown businesses that want to add sidewalk seating or improve their storefronts. Planning is underway for the Uptown Live Summer Series, which will offer free live performances every weekend this summer. There is also a call out for artists to submit banner design proposals. And the UBA would like to connect with anyone who has an engaging idea for activating space in uptown.
New executive director
The UBA board recently completed a search for a leader to guide and implement their strategic vision. “We were looking for a strong administrator with fresh ideas and a passion for the business community. The board was impressed with the wide range of skills and community-building experience that Cameron brings to this role,” said Solvi Stokholm, UBA board member and owner of Co-operators Financial Investment Services.
Cameron moved to New Westminster from the Sunshine Coast in 2024. She immediately became involved in the community through volunteering with the New West Hospice Society and the New West Homelessness Coalition’s Will You Be My Neighbour project. Her background in hospitality, accounting, communication, event management, and entrepreneurship will all work together to serve the New West community in her new role. “I am both thrilled and thankful for the opportunity to serve the uptown New Westminster businesses. Recent upgrades in the community have sparked a vibrancy that I hope to build upon. I am eager to meet the UBA members, learn about their needs, and create meaningful impact for uptown businesses and customers,” said Sheila Cameron.
